Daniëlle Kempen is a stylist and creative director, but above all, a visual storyteller.
From Haarlem in the Netherlands to the tropical landscapes of Costa Rica, Daniëlle has turned both inner and outer journeys into a constant source of inspiration. With over ten years of experience in the fashion industry, she has collaborated with magazines like Vogue and Glamour, crafting campaigns that go far beyond styling, she imagines, creates, and produces the entire story.
Today, we pause to explore another dimension of her life: motherhood. Keep reading.
What’s something your daughter has said recently that totally surprised or cracked you up?
Something she’s been doing a lot lately immediately comes to mind. When we’re out together or she’s playing and I’m nearby, she’ll suddenly give me this cheeky little wink. So casual, like she’s saying, “Hey mom, this is fun, right?” It’s so sweet, those little moments between us are really starting to grow.
Is there anything you’re planning to do differently with baby #2 than you did the first time?
Not necessarily, but it will definitely be different. Billy had a unique start to life, spending a large part of her first year growing up in the jungle of Costa Rica. We hope to return there early next year with the second baby. I really believe it’s incredibly beneficial for babies and young children to grow up close to nature, feet in the sand, hands in the dirt. Life in the Western world can be so sterile, it’s almost impossible for their immune systems to develop properly. I wish that same natural beginning for our second child.
How has your daughter been reacting to the idea of becoming a big sister?
So lovingly! The other day she told me, “I want to take care of the baby too and give her milk, but I’m not changing any poopy diapers because that’s really gross!”
If you had a whole day to yourself, no kids, no responsibilities, how would you spend it?
A summer day, early morning, a cold dip in natural water, followed by a coffee with the sun on my face. I’d let the day unfold intuitively and spontaneously. A walk in nature, maybe exploring an unfamiliar route through the city and discovering new places. Maybe a Pilates class and ending the day at a restaurant with my partner or a friend.
What’s one piece of advice you wish someone had given you before becoming a mom?
Motherhood has truly taught me patience and the art of letting go. It’s a bit like surfing. At first, you think you can control the waves, but once you learn to move with the flow, you realize everything becomes so much easier.
Thank you, Daniëlle, for sharing your perspective on motherhood, so sincere and deeply connected to your creative universe.
